INTRODUCTION to BOOKBINDING

COST: $250.00 for 18 hour class (6 three-hour sessions)

This course is the first step on the road to becoming a bookbinder, or just a chance to familiarize yourself with the craft.

Topics covered include:
* History of books and bookbinding
* Explanation of the nature of paper
* Description of the tools of the trade
* Folding paper and the creation of signatures
* Binding a single section notebook
* Sewing signatures to make a multi-section book
* Book dissection
* General care of books

By end of the course, the student will have made two single section books and one multi-section book, as well as become prepared for further courses in bookbinding.

Instructor Kevin Oliver has been a professional bookbinder for over 20 years, specializing in the repair and restoration of rare books. Kevin learned the craft under the traditional tutelage of a master bookbinder in Cornwall, England. He has dedicated his career to all forms of fine binding, restoration and teaching.

BARE BONES BOOKBINDING

COST: $75.00 for 4 hour class (1 four-hour session)

This is our popular one-session workshop designed to give the student the feel for the bookbinding craft. It will touch on the most important aspects of book mechanics, materials and process. Participants will leave the workshop with one hard-bound, single section blank book.

Topics include:
* Tour of the bindery and introduction to tools
* Understanding paper grain
* Folding large sheets into sections
* The Golden Mean and its importance to books
* Understanding adhesives
* Making a case
* Introduction to foil stamping

 *Special scheduling is available for individual groups of four or more students.
